Soldiers and Staples

Memorial day took a different turn this year and we will never be able to celebrate it again without remember the first trip we took to the ER. This year we were on the farm for Memorial day and I love to go to the Memorial Day program that our town puts on. Getting to see all the men and women from our hometown who have served is always very humbling. Unfortunately, the program isn't super kid friendly (Meaning they have to be quiet for more than 5 minutes...) so Nat decided he and my sister would take the kids to the elementary school playground while we sat at the program. Long story short, Ty slipped on some of the pea rock and cracked open the back of his head. Luckily Becky is a nurse AND a mom so Nat was in good hands. Dad of course thought he could sew it up himself, but we decided not to take any chances and took him to the ER. The entire experience as well as we could have asked for. They said that staples were much easier to use on that part of the head and that there was no point in numbing it because sticking him to numb it was just as bad as the staples AND by the time you got to the staples they would be more scared. So what do they do? Swaddle that 2 year old up and we pretty much just held him as tightly as we could. There are few things harder than seeing your child in pain AND scared AND confused as to why I am LETTING these people do this. It was such a relief to have Nat there by my side. Pretty sure we just kept passing him back and forth because we needed to be comforted as much as he did. :-) Pathetic I know. Anyway....One week with the staples in his sweet head and then Aunt Becky was sweet enough to take them out for us so we didn't have to go back in to the doctor and scare him again (AND we didn't have to pay another awesome fee!!) Pretty sure she gets aunt of the year!!
I never really got a good look at it because I was trying to soothe him, but Nat saw enough to make the decision for us.
Not sure who was happier about the ESPN in the ER.....Pretty sure it calmed daddy down too.
3 little staples holding that sweet head together. Maybe dad was right and we really didn't need to go down there, but I slept much better knowing it was taken care of and THAT is priceless.

  1. Oh my gosh... when Jack had to get stitches in his chin last summer, I cried too! They had to wrap him up in this little burrito thing to keep him still and his little eyes looking at me crying was too much! Thankfully Bryan was much stronger than I was. So glad Ty is doing okay!!!
